GMM speaker launches annual school debate

“Among you, I see future leaders and this launch is a preparation for the youth council meeting that will be held in the youth month which is June.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality speaker, Fikile Magagamela, hosted four schools for a debate at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre on March 23.

The schools that took part were KI Thwala, Thomas Nhlabathi and Sizwakele secondary schools from eMbalenhle and Highveld Park High School from Secunda.

The Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School won the speakers’ debate trophy while Highveld Park took second place.

Learners were given a chance to debate issues that affect the country, such as load-shedding and crime.

Magagamela told the learners that debate is a critical tool that can make them critical thinkers.

“Among you, I see future leaders and a debate of such a nature is a preparation for the youth council meeting that will be held in Youth Month (June).

“That is where we are going to elect a junior speaker, mayor and a chief whip,” said Magagamela.
