eMzinoni teacher hits all the right notes

Ngidi Masilela, a teacher at eMzinoni High School, has won many awards in choral music.

Masilela, who graduated and obtained his teaching qualification at Mbumbulu College of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, started working as a private teacher and began singing choral music.

He developed a love for opera music when he was eight years old.

Masilela has recently released a single classical gospel album called Yehla Moya (Come Down Holy Spirit) which is doing well on social media platforms.

Masilela also won the Best Gospel Opera award in the Mpumalanga Gospel Music Awards held in Nelspruit in 2014.

“As a teacher, singer and a family man, I have to manage my time to accommodate these three things.

“Since I began teaching, I made sure that I establish a choral music choir at whichever school I was working. I also have made sure to produce choir conductors.

“Wherever I go, I leave music talent, although opera is difficult to understand and requires a patient person.

“I never went to school or college to study music. It is a God-given talent,” he said.

Masilela is thankful for the support from his family.

“I planted a love for opera in my family and though it was difficult at first, my family started to love what I am doing.

“My daughter now wants to get fully involved in my music career by becoming my manager,” said Masilela.

He has performed with well-known opera groups in the country and is also a founder of the Leandra Sweet Voices, Bartimias Youth Singers, Intando Yesizwe choral choir, Joy of Mzinoni and eMzinoni Youth Singers.

His music is also played on local and national radio stations. He encourages others, especially teachers, to develop their talents.
