Load-shedding takes no prisoners in Standerton

“With regular power outages, home alarm systems are at an increased risk of being disabled or not functioning correctly,” Jannie Kasselman said.

Frustration was compounded by misery for locals when Eskom introduced stage 6 on April 12, resulting in no water supply.

The above probably does not apply to those living off the grid with a generator, inverter and a JoJo tank in the yard.

The culprit, a thief who stole a cable at substation B, affected the Standerton Water Treatment Plant, and it could not function.

Substation B supplies electricity to the plant.

The batteries at a cellphone tower can only take so much, and a local asked if other people also experienced difficulty with their DStv signal.

Jannie Kasselman warned the past week that criminals could have a field day during power interruptions and said alarms needed to be regularly tested.

“Load-shedding can have a severe impact on home alarm systems,” Kasselman said.

A cable was stolen at substation B this past week.

“It is important to ensure that your system is properly maintained and regularly tested to operate optimally during load-shedding.”

He also said security officers, the SAPS, community patrols, neighbourhood watches and residents have to protect the infrastructure in the Standerton area during load-shedding.

A national retail store in town had a blackout on April 13 for a few minutes and cellphones’ flashes were used to negotiate the aisles.

Lekwa Municipality has said on more than one occasion that cable theft costs them an arm and a leg.
