Youth in Standerton encouraged to be farmers
Gert Sibande TVET College said the career expo was aimed at making agriculture more fashionable and interesting to the youth which means creating economic game changers.
The core value of Youth in Agriculture and Rural Development (YARD) is to introduce, promote and improve the youth’s participation in agriculture.
The agricultural career exhibition on May 23 aimed to plant a seed in the youth of Lekwa Municipality and invite them into the world of agriculture through relevant career guidance.
“We want to encourage the youth the youth to disassociate against the stigma of dependency by seeking employment and encourage them to venture into entrepreneurship, We will create future economic leaders in this way,” their statement read.
Motshidisi Modise, the chairperson of YARD, said the organisation aims to invest in the youth of Lekwa, in developing active farmers who are contributing towards food security through the practice of primary agriculture.

“They will equip the youth with knowledge vital to the selection of their careers in the agricultural sector.
“We are optimistic about this initiative. This exhibition is the beginning of a beautiful agricultural future that will result in a positive impact on youth development.”

“They were teaching about careers that are pursuable in the sector, the vast gap for entrepreneurs, the importance of food safety and security, the international market and most importantly, protecting nature among a list of topics to engage in.
“We pride ourselves on the opportunity to be exposed to the fundamental pillar of the country’s economy, which is farming,” their statement read.
“Out of the seven campuses the college has, Perdekop Campus is a campus mainly labelled as the agricultural campus, with seven hectares of land.
“Through the campus, the college has acquired a farm with more than 300 hectares mainly responsible for farming experiences.”
