Little Paws Big Hearts also reaches out to animals in informal settlement near Kinross

Little Paws Big Hearts, a non-profit animal welfare organisation, recently visited the Afghanistan informal settlement near Kinross for the first time.

Sonja Kempen from the organisation said they have decided to adopt another settlement, in addition to the three they already visit regularly. This organisation has been reaching out to animals in need since they formed in 2013.

“We have been wanting to visit Afghanistan for a long time, but as often the case with non-profit organisations, a lack of resources prevented us from expanding and doing more good,” said Kempen.

Little Paws Big Hearts is the first non-profit animal rescue organisation to do a physical outreach project in Afghanistan.

Kempen said the residents welcomed them warmly. Although there was the odd occasion of negativity, they trained the team to handle such situations and they soon won the hearts of the people in the community.

“It was a proud moment for us, but also very emotional as we saw many animals in dire need,” said Kempen.

“There is a myriad of skinny, neglected and sick animals. Turning the situation around will take time, hard work and community support.

“However, we have done it in three other settlements and will do it again.”

Andey Wrigley, a long-time volunteer and member of Little Paws Big Hearts and who was part of the team in Afghanistan, said this outreach was one of his favourites.

“Seeing the animals, no matter their condition, respond to love and cuddles, made my heart beat stronger,” said Wrigley.

“I wish I could do this every day.”
