Another accident on R23 in Standerton

In a recent statement, Mayor Delani Louis Thabethe of the Lekwa Municipality said he had learnt with shock and disappointment about another accident on the R23 at Ext 6, Sakhile, allegedly because of the traffic circle.

A truck driver lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, crashing through a palisade fence.
There were no reports of fatalities or injuries.

“This is not the first time our residents survived a similar incident where a vehicle plunged into their homes,” Thabethe said.

“This is one incident too many. Something must urgently be done. We hope Sanral and its sub-contractors will act quickly and address the problem of that road.”

Thabethe said he had since instructed the municipal manager to call an urgent meeting with Sanral and other relevant stakeholders, such as Mpumalanga Provincial Traffic Control, to find solutions and prevent similar accidents.

The meeting was on July 17.

According to the mayor, their emergency unit, which responded promptly to these accidents, raised the issue of the R23 accidents next to the traffic circles.

“Our hearts go out to the families affected by these accidents. We will meet them soon to find out how we can assist them,” he concluded.

The Standerton Advertiser emailed Lubabalo Majenge, the communications manager at Lekwa, on July 21 for comment on the meeting.
