Police combine forces and recover firearm in Standerton

When the suspect saw the police at Robertsdrift near the RDP houses, he dropped a plastic bag he was holding and ran towards Mahala informal settlement.

Crime intelligence-driven information led to the recovery of a firearm, which was reported stolen in Standerton in June.

According to a statement from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, members from

Standerton K9 Unit and Standerton Visible Policing worked together on July 14.

They identified a suspect who matched the description of the one who was in possession of the firearm.

When the suspect saw the police at Robertsdrift near the RDP houses, he dropped a plastic bag he was holding and ran towards Mahala informal settlement.

Police said he disappeared into thin air. When checking inside the plastic bag, a 9mm Parabellum pistol with an empty magazine was found.

Police are still in pursuit of the suspect.

The provincial commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, said police will do their best to deal with the proliferation of firearms by ensuring that they remove these weapons from the wrong hands.
