No horsing around when Bapsfontein vet removes Ossie’s tooth
Dr Evert Olivier says police horse is recovering well after dental procedure.
The Bapsfontein Animal Hospital recently had an unusual patient. Ossie, an 18-year-old police horse that has served the community for the past decade, had a tooth problem.
The EMPD took Ossie to the animal hospital because they were concerned he was losing weight and couldn’t chew properly.
This four-legged cop has helped with many roadblocks, drug busts and the recovery of two unlawful firearms.
During the initial dental examination, they found Ossie had a crown fracture and a tooth root abscess. Dr Evert Olivier pulled Ossie’s tooth at the hospital and evened out the rest of his teeth.
According to Oliver, Ossie was recovering well and had gained weight a week after the procedure.
“With age, a horse’s teeth get shorter and could easily break. When that happens, it forms a tooth root abscess, leading to excruciating pain if not removed.”
Olivier said having your horse’s teeth checked for problems every six to 12 months was the best thing an owner could do.
