Family of 10 live in poverty in eMbalenhle

“In winter, my husband and I collect cow dung in the veld with which to make fire for heat. We do not have enough blankets for everyone, so we will sometimes sit by the cow dung fire throughout the night so that the children have enough blankets.”

There are some days when the Tieho family goes to bed hungry.

The family comprises of mom Matsheisa, who is blind, father Khang Tieho who is a pensioner, their six teenage children, and two grandchildren of two and five years.

They live in a three-room shack in eMbalenhle.

The parents share one room with their three daughters and grandchildren, while their three sons sleep in the other room. The third room serves as the kitchen and living room.

“In winter, my husband and I collect cow dung in the veld with which to make fire for heat.

Matsheisha and Khang Tieho share this bedroom with their three daughters.

“We do not have enough blankets for everyone, so we will sometimes sit by the cow dung fire throughout the night so that the children have enough blankets,” said Matsheisa.

They mainly survive on spinach from their small garden and maize meal given to them by compassionate neighbours.

“Five of our children are supposed to be in school, but because they don’t have ID or birth certificates, they don’t attend school,” said Matsheisa.

The Tieho couple will be grateful for an RDP house, clothes and food and to be able to send their children to school.

Matsheisa said anyone willing to help can contact her on 079 679 1074.
