Counterfeit goods worth R1m seized in Delmas

Members from provincial traffic and traffic officials from the Victor Khanye Local Municipality came to their aid, pulling over both vehicles.

Three suspects, aged 22 to 41, were arrested on August 28 for counterfeit goods worth R1m. The suspects, of whom one is a woman from Mozambique, were nabbed in Delmas.

According to Captain Carla Hartley, the media spokesperson for the Delmas police, detectives from Delmas were travelling on the R555 towards Delmas when they noticed a blue Toyota Condor with a KwaZulu-Natal registration.

Because the driver drove recklessly, the detectives tried to stop the Condor, but it sped off. A chase ensued.

The police also noticed a white Toyota Condor with Gauteng registration plates.

According to the police, the drivers of these two vehicles signalled to one another and then followed each other.

They drove recklessly. The police continued their pursuit and called for backup.

Members from provincial traffic and traffic officials from the Victor Khanye Local Municipality came to their aid, pulling over both vehicles.

“The goods inside the vehicles were knock-offs of branded items, such as Nike, Puma, Reebok and Adidas sneakers and flip-flops. All the items were seized. The estimated retail value is about R1m,” said Hartley.

They arrested the three suspects, and the vehicles were seized for further investigation to determine if they were used in the commission of crimes elsewhere.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, welcomed the arrests.

Manamela applauded the law enforcement agencies’ collaboration in bringing the perpetrators to book.
