Cullinan Scout is first to win the Springbok Award since 1985
The Springbok Award is the highest award achievable by any Scout in South Africa.
A 25th Cullinan Scout, Nia-Lee O’Neill (18), is the first Scout to win the Springbok Award since 1985.
The Springbok Award is the highest award achievable by any Scout in South Africa.
To achieve this award, a Scout needs to have completed the first class advancement and then complete several projects.
These tasks are done without the help of adults and challenge the Scout to experience adult life.
Scouts have to learn how to communicate, plan and budget.
The three biggest tasks that need pre-approval from the RTC Scout programme are the expedition, major project and community service.
For her expedition, Nia-Lee took the younger Scouts on a three-day, two-night hike to Ezemvelo Nature Reserve outside Bronkhorstspruit.
Her major project was when she went on a seven-day nature course near Ellisras. For community service, she chose to do a fundraiser for Pigs ’n Paws outside Cullinan.
She was also involved in several other projects, such as organising a three-day camp held at Premier Nature Reserve and doing a presentation on Scouting, which she did at the Rayton Tutorsentrum.
