Gert Sibande District Municipality’s Mayor Walter Mngomezulu assured residents in Amersfoort that the intervention to improve the provision of potable water in surrounding areas in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Municipality will solve the current water crisis.
Mngomezulu made the commitment to locals, who braved the cold weather during a mayoral imbizo at the Amersfoort sports grounds on September 27.
He said the Department of Water and Sanitation had committed to funding the upgrade of the water treatment bulk water infrastructure. This will be implemented with the district and local municipalities.
“For many years, our focus was on reticulation, which aimed to bring potable water to our households,” he said.
“We are committed to attending to the critical infrastructure for bulk water as we have done in other municipalities, to meeting the demand and ensuring communities have uninterrupted supply.”
The community expressed their concerns, and the executive mayors from both municipalities responded.
He also committed to work with his counterpart, Bheki Mhlanga, in continuing to engage other stakeholders, including Eskom and Transnet, on their social labour plans implemented in the local municipality.
Councillors and other leaders, including the mayors from the Lekwa and Mkhondo municipalities, attended the imbizo.
Government departments such as Sassa, Employment and Labour, the Department of Health, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs brought services closer to the local communities.
