The Secunda Regional Court again postponed the trial of alleged serial killer and rapist Themba Shongwe to November 22.
Two police officers took the stand to testify about handling the crime kits of the victims – from the point of compilation until each reached the Science Laboratory Centre in Pretoria.
The grandmother of Mihle Zingamo (one of the young victims) also testified.
Nompumelelo Dladla told the court she knows Shongwe because he grew up in front of her, and their families shared a good relationship.
The prosecutor, Advocate Tracy Keen Horak, asked Dladla if Mihle would have gone to Shongwe if he had called her, to which the grandmother said Mihle knew Shongwe well and took him as her older brother.
The case of Shongwe, who is accused of raping and murdering several young girls aged 11 to 16 between 2016 and 2018, is on the court roll at the Secunda Regional Court.
His alleged victims are Mihle Zingamo, Cynthia Masilela, Lerato Nkutha and Nokulunga Nkutha. A fifth girl was unknown and buried as a pauper because no one claimed her remains.
