UPDATE: GMM Mayor speaks about pollution fine

GMM found guilty.

UPDATE

The Govan Mbeki Municipality executive mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma told the media this morning (April 11) that some measures have already been implemented to address sewage spills across the municipality.

The Bethal Regional Court on Tuesday fined GMM R200 million for water pollution.

R50m of this amount is suspended for five years providing that GMM is not again found guilty of water pollution.

The Bethal Regional Court has today (April 9) fined the Govan Mbeki Municipality R150m for water pollution.

GMM was found guilty of being in contravention of the National Environmental Waste Management Act for pollution of water resources and failure to comply with a compliance notice, as well as several other charges.

These offences were committed from November 2019 to September 2020.

The municipal manager, Elliot Maseko, attended the court proceedings on behalf of the municipality.
