eMbalenhle residents are tired of sewage spills

The municipality’s acting communications manager, Donald Green, said their sewer teams are on-site clearing a backlog of sewer blockages in the Govan Mbeki Municipality and the surrounding areas.

Residents of Ext 20 in eMbalenhle are tired of living in an unhealthy environment caused by sewage spills.

These residents claim their complaints and reports to the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) yielded many unfulfilled promises. Residents said they have endured 10 years surrounded by sewage.

“It is difficult for us to eat because of the stench, and this sewage water will destroy our houses. The ward councillor keeps promising they will fix it, but nothing has happened. This infringes our rights to live in a healthy environment,” said a resident.

“We can confirm that during the attendance of sewer overflows in some areas, we discovered foreign objects such as rubble, stones, sanitary towels, rugs, and carcasses caused most of the blockages.

“We also identified vandalism as one of the main causes of sewer blockages.

“The municipality has and continues to procure additional equipment to improve and accelerate service delivery,” said Green.
