About the artists:

• Hardus Koekemoer, who has called Cullinan home since 2002 and is a passionate art collector, began his art collection in 1988.

His journey into art was sparked on a trip to Belgium and the Netherlands, where he purchased his first artwork by Picasso.

This experience marked the beginning of his lifelong engagement with art. His knowledge and passion for art were further enhanced by his ownership and operation of an art gallery in Antwerp, Belgium.

After returning to South Africa in 1994, Koekemoer embarked on a career as a décor painter, stage manager at the State Theatre, and subsequently a lecturer in performing arts at TUT, where he excelled as a theatre and lighting designer.

The serene environment of Cullinan offered Koekemoer the perfect setting to concentrate on painting and producing print artworks. Over time, he has collected thousands of pieces, from which he has chosen the most impactful for the museum’s display.

“Guests are invited to experience the interplay between the venue’s architectural beauty and the art it houses,” says Koekemoer.

The HK Contemporary space also boasts a private art studio, where individuals can take part in printmaking and painting classes, as well as a gallery for those looking to purchase artwork.

• Ashley Mdaka Dlamini is a 31-year-old self-taught artist from Hospital View, Thembisa who has called Cullinan home since 2018. Art has been a vital part of his life, and he feels fortunate to have transformed his passion into a fulfilling career.

“From a young age, art has come naturally to me, serving as a creative outlet and a source of motivation,” says Dlamini.

His work focuses on capturing the human form in a dreamlike, expressive manner, using dry brushing techniques to achieve soft, blurred lines that convey movement and energy.

Inspired by the beauty of Cullinan and its surroundings, Dlamini aims to reflect on this essence in his art, connecting with others through his unique perspective.

“Throughout my artistic journey, I have been influenced by numerous talented artists, including experiences in classes with renowned figures like Koekemoer and Mimi van der Merwe. These opportunities have not only refined my skills but also expanded my view of art,” continues Dlamini.

“Visitors can expect to experience a thought-provoking and visually stunning collection of artworks, including paintings and interactive displays.

“Artist talks are available upon request, and a catalogue of artworks is available for purchase,” says Dlamini.

• Doctor Maila, a 29-year-old self-taught artist from Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga, living in Cullinan for a two-month residency at HK Contemporary Museum, Gallery & Studio where he focuses on painting and honing his craft.

“My passion for art ignited during my primary school years, where I created pastel and pencil drawings of my favourite cartoons, cars, and animals,” says Maila.

In 2019, he enrolled at the Tshwane University of Technology to further develop his skills. His favourite mediums are oil paints and charcoal, which he uses to express his vibrant and emotive style.

He draws inspiration from the Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu, whose work impacted him, particularly the way her art resonates within their community and on an international scale.

“Participating in exhibitions is crucial, as it not only provides recognition for my work but also helps me build a sustainable career as an artist. I aspire to grow my name and reputation, hoping to achieve international acclaim,” says Maila.
