Vet specialist joins Dr Darko’s team in Secunda

Acclaimed internist is set to revolutionise veterinary care in the TEKS area.

Dr Darko Zupanc, owner of Dr Darko Vet Hospital, is excited to announce the upcoming arrival of esteemed veterinarian specialist, Dr Varaidzo Mukorera, who will be an asset to their team.

Mukorera will join the team in February and this highly anticipated addition solidifies Dr Darko Vet Hospital’s position as a leading referral hospital in the region.

Mukorera, a distinguished internist in the veterinary field, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the hospital.

Her exceptional skills and knowledge will undoubtedly make a profound impact on the lives of pets in the Secunda area.

Growing up, Mukorera was inspired by her maternal grandfather, Peter, an agricultural extension officer, and her uncle, Fungai, an animal health technician.

Their influence, combined with the motivational books of James Herriot, sparked her passion for veterinary medicine.

Notably, Mukorera acknowledges the challenges she faced as a black person entering the veterinary profession, where representation was scarce.

She completed her five year veterinary programme, laying a strong foundation in biology and chemistry.

Her post-graduation experience encompassed various roles, including a brief stint in dairy field practice, six months in private practice, and two and a half years in a government position working with wildlife.

This diverse experience allowed her to work with an array of species, including crocodiles, rhinos, elephants, and giraffes.

One particularly challenging experience that stands out was transporting a rhino for 15-20 hours.

Mukorera furthered her education by completing a master’s degree in Small Animal Internal Medicine (2007-2012) in South Africa.

Her research focused on biomarkers (VEGF and ALP) to differentiate between benign and malignant spirocercosis.

She also partially completed a European board residency and worked as a senior lecturer and internist, teaching undergraduate nursing and veterinary students as well as postgraduates in small animal internal medicine.

As a researcher, Mukorera has concentrated on antibiotic resistance in dogs and cats.

She currently serves as an independent research supervisor and has graduated multiple master’s students as supervisor and co-supervisor.

Her ongoing research explores antibiotic resistance patterns specific to South Africa.

Mukorera’s areas of special interest include urinary tract diseases, oncology, endocrinology, critical care medicine, seizure management, and teaching.

She emphasises a strong thought process, attention to detail, and commitment to client education and empowerment.

In her approach, Mukorera prioritises making complex concepts accessible, involving owners in the decision-making process, and acknowledging the limitations of her knowledge.

She is passionate about continuous learning and professional development.

As she joins Dr Darko Vet Hospital, Mukorera looks forward to expanding her expertise beyond academic institutions.

She is eager to learn new skills, including surgery, and practice as a specialist in a non-academic setting.

Mukorera has been involved with the South African Animal Cancer Association and has experience with special treatments, including electrochemotherapy.

She is interested in developing oncology services and research.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mukorera to our team,” said Zupanc.

“Her expertise and passion for delivering exceptional patient care align perfectly with our hospital’s values and mission.”

Secunda residents will now be able to have access to one of the country’s best-equipped veterinary hospitals, staffed by a team of dedicated and highly skilled professionals.

Mukorera’s arrival in February marks an exciting new chapter for Dr Darko Vet Hospital and the Secunda community.

Pet owners in the Secunda area can look forward to receiving the highest standard of care for their beloved pets.
