Gauteng Roads Department wheels out poor attendance solution

The initiative primarily benefits learners specialising in maths and science, recognising the importance of these subjects in shaping future careers in engineering, technology, and innovation.

To ensure access to education, the Gauteng Department of Roads donated bicycles to learners at a high school in Rayton.

This initiative aims to help learners who live far from school and face transport challenges, ensuring they arrive on time for classes throughout the year.

Many learners live in areas where school buses have limited access, making daily attendance difficult.

The department seeks to eliminate these barriers and improve academic performance by providing bicycles.

With reliable transport, learners can focus on their studies without the stress of long or unsafe commutes.

Ward Clr Johannes Bekker and school representatives welcomed the programme, emphasising its positive impact on education and youth development.

“This initiative is a game-changer for learners. Access to education is about more than just classrooms and books – it’s also about ensuring learners can get to school safely and on time. This programme supports academic excellence, especially in crucial subjects like maths and science, which are key to our country’s future development,” said Bekker.

The department confirmed that the programme will include several schools throughout Gauteng to support learners facing transport difficulties.

This donation aligns with a broader goal of improving education access and ensuring no child suffers because of logistical challenges.

The bicycles came with helmets and reflector jackets to emphasise safety.
