Grootdraai Dam’s level shows slight decrease

Local dam dips from from 102.5% to 101.6%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation released its most recent state of reservoirs report on February 5, detailing the current water levels of dams that form part of the Integrated Vaal River system.

The report states the Grootdraai Dam decreased from 102.5% to 101.6%.

“Most listed dams in the Gert Sibande District experienced slight increases in water volumes, highlighting the importance of continued water conservation efforts,” stated Brian Khoza, the communications officer for the DWS.

While most dams had increases in water levels, some continued to decline, however, these changes in water levels were minor.

Jericho Dam recorded a decline from 80.2% to 79.9%.

Nooitgedacht Dam did not increase nor decrease, but remained steady at 101.0%, while Vygeboom Dam increased from 100.3% to 100.5%.

Westoe Dam recorded an increase from 91.6% to 92.3% and Heyshope improved from 100.5% to 101.2%.

According to the statement, the overall water storage capacity in Mpumalanga remained stable at 94.9%.

“Despite relatively stable dam levels, South Africa remains one of the world’s 30 driest countries, making water conservation a national priority,” explained Khoza.

The DWS urged residents to use water sparingly and to report leaks to reduce water waste.
