Sakhile hosts sports event to fight drugs, GBV
Nearly 200 young people joined Sakhile’s sports day and awareness session aimed at tackling drug abuse, crime and GBV.
The Sakhile SAPS, the Youth Desk and the CPF joined forces to host a Sports Against Crime, Substance Abuse and GBV event at the Sakhile Stadium on June 21.
The day began with an awareness session focused on the theme of ‘Drug abuse and its connection to crime and GBV’.
Speakers addressed how substance use can derail young lives, especially for those with dreams of excelling in sports.
“Drug abuse can ruin your chances of going pro and lead you into a life of crime,” said event co-ordinator Anele Cele.
Cele emphasised the importance of encouraging healthy lifestyles so the youth have a chance at playing soccer and netball professionally.

The session included practical advice on where to seek help, as well as information about support departments working within the community.
Almost 200 people attended the event, including 110 players from school soccer and netball teams. Several organisations showed their support, including Justice 4 All, Sakhile Rise and Mzilankatha.
“Substance abuse remains one of the biggest challenges facing our young people. But the youths walked away with a better understanding of what leads to drug use and how to avoid it,” said Cele.
The day continued with spirited tournaments.
Soccer results:
• First: Kabasa Sporting;
• Second: Real Blizzards;
• Third: Peacelovers;

Cele concluded by calling for continued collaboration.
“Departments and organisations must work together to empower our youth. Events like this can help fight crime, drug abuse and GBV.”
