Health inspectors shut down butchery in Evander for selling rotten meat

The butchery was found to be in a severely unhygienic state, with an unbearable stench.

Health inspectors and the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s (GMM) law enforcement unit shut down a butchery located at the Old Mutual Building in Evander for selling expired and rotten meat.

According to a municipal statement, the closure follows alarming discoveries of rotten and expired meat being sold to customers, creating hazardous conditions for public health.

Municipal officials said the butchery was found to be in a severely unhygienic state, with an unbearable stench inside the premises posing significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers.

“Selling expired and rotten meat is a direct threat to public health, and businesses that fail to comply with safety regulations will face legal consequences.”

GMM urged consumers are urged to be vigilant when purchasing meat and to report any suspicions of unhygienic practices to health inspectors.

“The closure of the butchery serves as a stern warning to other businesses that fail to meet food safety requirements.”

The municipality warned that routine inspections will continue in all businesses as part of the municipality’s commitment to promoting clean, safe, and compliant trading environments for all residents.
