Illegal shooting of fireworks in Standerton angers residents

Residents fired fireworks in their yards, disrupting their neighbours and causing disorientation to animals.

The illegal use of fireworks in residential areas was a prominent feature on December 31, despite the Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM) issuing notices ahead of time.

The LLM started issuing notices about the fair use of fireworks on all social media platforms and WhatsApp groups on December 30 to curb the use of fireworks in residential areas.

According to a press release from the LLM, there were three areas designated for the firing of fireworks, including the Standerton Fire Station, Grootdraai Dam, and Morgenzon Dam.

However, most fireworks were fired off in residential neighbourhoods rather than in these areas.

Residents fired fireworks in their yards, disrupting their neighbours and causing disorientation to animals.

Residents used a large amount of these fireworks in the Ward 10 residential area, the Standerton Riverpark, and Sakhile.

Despite warnings from the municipality, these individuals blatantly ignored the warnings and continued to fire prohibited fireworks in unsafe areas.

With no publicly available hotline to report illegal firework usage, many residents entered the new year disgruntled and worried for the safety of their pets.
