Life sentence brings justice for Ellen Sikhosana
Court sends Jan Mofokeng to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of Thokozile Ellen Sikhosana in Standerton.
The Secunda Regional Court has sentenced Jan Mofokeng to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of Thokozile Ellen Sikhosana, who was killed on January 22, 2022, in Standerton.
Mofokeng was arrested and made his first appearance at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on February 15, 2022. Since then, Sikhosana’s family, along with supporting organisations, remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice.
The Standerton community has welcomed the sentence, describing it as a strong and necessary response to the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. Community members say the ruling sends a clear message that perpetrators of such heinous crimes will face the full might of the law.
The court’s decision to deny bail was also praised, particularly as Mofokeng had fled after committing the crime and reportedly shot the victim’s brother during the incident.

The handling of the case by the Secunda Regional Court has been commended for its urgency and effectiveness. There are now calls for other courts to follow suit to ensure justice is not delayed.
Stakeholders have further urged that GBVF-related cases currently facing repeated postponements at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court be escalated to higher courts with urgency, stressing that families deserve timely justice and closure.
They also reiterated their commitment to working with communities and relevant stakeholders to ensure that perpetrators serve the full duration of their sentences without early parole.
For the family, friends, and loved ones of Ellen Sikhosana, the ruling marks a significant moment of relief. While justice for Ellen has been achieved, the broader fight against GBVF continues.
