Kinross police warn motorists about blue-light hijacking tactics

They stop motorists under the pretence of conducting routine checks, often asking for a driver’s license.

Police in Kinross have issued a warning to motorists following a series of hijackings involving suspects impersonating law enforcement officials.

In one such incident in March, a motorist was hijacked and robbed of a Toyota Fortuner along the R580 road, between the water reservoirs and the Kriel turn-off. The incident happened during the day.

According to police, the suspects are using a white Volkswagen Golf 7 fitted with blue lights. The vehicle is unmarked, and its registration number reportedly ends with the letters “AB.”

The suspects are said to be wearing police uniforms without name tags to appear legitimate. They stop motorists under the pretence of conducting routine checks, often asking for a driver’s license.

While engaging the driver, an additional vehicle — described as an Omoda — arrives at the scene, and the suspects then carry out the hijacking.

Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly when approached by unmarked vehicles using blue lights.

Authorities also noted that in December, there was a spike in hijackings where suspects pretended to be stranded motorists. In those cases, criminals would pose as people who had run out of fuel, only to rob good Samaritans who stopped to assist.
