Sakhile CPF urges parents to protect children amid rise in rape cases

The CPF plans to launch an awareness campaign to educate parents about the importance of monitoring and protecting their children.

The Sakhile CPF has issued a strong warning to parents to take greater responsibility in safeguarding their children following a concerning increase in reported rape cases in the area.

CPF chairperson, Abram Madonsela, said the forum has observed that many children are left vulnerable, with some parents unaware of their whereabouts or the times they return home.

“We have noticed certain entertainment areas where underage children gather regularly, engaging in activities such as smoking. Many of the rape cases involving minors are linked to these locations. The question we are asking is: where are the parents?” said Madonsela.

He added that the CPF plans to launch an awareness campaign to educate parents about the importance of monitoring and protecting their children.

“We hope that through this campaign, parents will begin to take a more active role in ensuring their children’s safety,” he said.

Madonsela also highlighted ongoing challenges with non-compliant taverns in the area. He explained that some establishments continue to operate outside the conditions of their licenses, contributing to an increase in assault cases.

“Taverns that do not comply with their operating licenses remain a serious concern. While the police issue fines, many owners continue with unlawful practices,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Madonsela noted progress in combating other crimes.

“We have made significant strides in reducing housebreakings and theft by establishing patrol groups across all Sakhile sectors, as well as promoting neighbourhood watch initiatives,” he added.

Madonsela also said they are facing a shortage of resources at their station, such as bakkies to attend to crime.

“As the CPT, together with the police, we are trying so hard to fight crime with limited resources but we hope we will get additional bakkies soon.

Sakhile has grown so fast and an additional police station is required, as CPF we are engaging the relevant department to have another police station built,” said Madonsela.
