Local Sensei and Sasol electrician Breshnev Dhlamini has put Secunda on the international map, securing two bronze medals at the 24th Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) International Open Karate Championships.
SECUNDA – Sensei Breshnev Dhlamini (30) secured two third-place finishes at the 24th Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) International Open Karate Championships, held from March 26 to 30 in Takanabe, Miyazaki, Japan.
The Secunda-based sensei and coach earned a bronze medal in the Open Division Kumite and another third-place finish in the Kata event.
Beyond the championships on March 29, the five-day itinerary included a technical seminar conducted by chief technical director Kancho Kenichi Fukamizu, an annual general meeting (AGM), and Dan diploma grading.
Participants also attended a welcome ceremony and a special training session held at the Maizuru Shrine on March 27.
Dhlamini is the founder of his own Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) dojo in Secunda with about 20 students.
A full-time electrician at Sasol, he uses karate to instil discipline and respect in local youth, aiming to keep them away from substance abuse and trouble. He also serves as the coach for the Mpumalanga provincial karate team.
