Animal shelter in Evander appeals for urgent community support

Every contribution, regardless of size, will help ensure it can continue providing care and shelter to vulnerable animals while stabilising its finances.

Khulula Animal Welfare Society (KHAWS) has issued an urgent appeal to the community, warning that it is facing one of the most critical financial crises since opening its doors in February 2025.

The NPO says it is operating beyond capacity while struggling to provide food and medical care for the animals in its care.

According to KHAWS spokesperson Stefanie Burr-Dixon, its veterinary accounts have been closed because of outstanding balances, preventing the organisation from accessing essential treatment for injured, sick and abused animals until the debts are settled.

The shelter’s bank balance has reportedly dropped to just R1 500.

The organisation currently has outstanding expenses totalling R108 193.14, including veterinary accounts, salaries, food, bookkeeping, telecommunications, auditing costs and other operational expenses.

“Without immediate financial assistance, animals may go without food and medical treatment, and the organisation could be forced to make extremely difficult decisions regarding its future,” said Burr-Dixon.

Community members are encouraged to assist by making financial donations, sponsoring bags of animal food, sharing the appeal on social media or partnering with the organisation as business sponsors.

“We are begging our community, please don’t let us get to the point where we close our doors permanently. Their lives depend on it,” said Burr-Dixon.

Every contribution, regardless of size, will help ensure it can continue providing care and shelter to vulnerable animals while stabilising its finances.
