Govan Mbeki Municipality warns against illegal cutting of municipal trees
The municipality aims to respond to tree-related complaints within three working days, subject to the availability of resources.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality has reminded residents that the unauthorised cutting, damaging or removal of trees in municipal parks, sidewalks and open spaces is strictly prohibited and is a violation of the municipality’s parks and open spaces by-law.
The municipality warned that anyone found contravening the by-law may, upon conviction, face a fine of up to R2 000, imprisonment, or both.
The municipality also stated that in cases where the offence continues, additional penalties may apply and the offenders may also be required to compensate the municipality for any loss or damage caused, and the municipality may institute legal proceedings to recover these costs.
According to Donald Green, the municipality media liaison and content developer, the by-law came into effect on November 11, 2014, following its publication in the Mpumalanga Provincial Gazette, Notice No. 2385.
Green said the municipality remains committed to protecting the natural environment and will take firm action against anyone who unlawfully cuts or damages municipal trees.
“Trees provide important environmental, social and aesthetic benefits and preserving them is essential for the well-being of both current and future generations.
“Residents are encouraged to report anyone cutting or damaging municipal trees without a valid municipal permit.
