eMbalenhle’s Shapeve Primary School introduces Grade R learners to careers
Exposing children to different careers while they are still young is aimed at inspiring curiosity, building confidence and encouraging them to dream big about their future.
Shapeve Primary School hosted a career day for its Grade R learners on August 5, giving young children an opportunity to learn about a variety of professions under the theme, ‘Jobs People Do’.
The educational programme brought together professionals from different sectors of the community to introduce learners to the world of work from an early age and help them understand that every profession plays an important role in building a safe, healthy and successful community.
According to the school, exposing children to different careers while they are still young is aimed at inspiring curiosity, building confidence and encouraging them to dream big about their future.
Teacher Hlengiwe Sambo said early career exposure is an important part of a child’s development.
“Early career exposure plays an important role in a child’s development. It allows learners to discover different professions, understand the value of education, and realise that with hard work, discipline and determination, they can achieve their dreams.
“Meeting professionals in person helps children connect classroom learning with real-life careers, inspiring them to become future leaders and positive contributors to society,” said Sambo.
The event featured guest speakers representing a wide range of professions, including firefighters, South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, doctors, dentists, audiometrists, nurses, traffic officers, teachers, social workers, Childline representatives and media practitioners.
Each professional explained what their job involves, the responsibilities they carry, the tools and uniforms they use, and how their work benefits the community.
Learners actively participated by asking questions and interacting with the guest speakers, making the experience educational, engaging and memorable.
The school said the Career Day formed part of its commitment to broadening learners’ understanding of the many career opportunities available to them and motivating them to work towards achieving their future goals from an early age.
