SECUNDA – A group of people are planning to bring the parkrun that is hosted in countries worldwide, to Secunda.
The launch of the Secunda parkrun will take place on Saturday, 25 October at 8am and from then on every Saturday.
Athletes will meet at Trichardspruit Dam in PDP Kruger Street and will run or walk 5km.
Anyone is welcome to take part in the parkrun.
Altogether 39 towns in South Africa is already hosting the park run and participants can take their dogs, run, walk and even push a pram in this 5km park run.
It is free of charge and those interested can register online at www.parkrun.co.za/secunda and then take part in any park run worldwide.
Once runners have registered, they can print out their unique barcodes and their numbers will then be scanned at the end of every parkrun.
Runners will then receive their results weekly.
The parkrun began in 2004 in Teddington in the United Kingdom with just 13 runners and was brought to South Africa by the Comrades Marathon legend, Bruce Fordyce.
He is also the country manager for parkruns in South Africa.
As part of the launch, Bruce Fordyce will be joining the first Secunda parkrun.
There are more than a million registered parkrunners worldwide and more than 65 000 in South Africa.
“It is part of the organisers of the parkruns’ aim to create a healthy community where people are more actively walking, jogging and running and help those that would like to transition into formal club structures and take part in other organised wellness events in the community,” said one of the organisers, Mr Dean Moore.
