A netball player with big dreams

“Netball is a sport where you have to work as a team to win.”

Nondumiso Vilakazi (15) is a netball player with big dreams.

She was born in Bethal and began her school career at MD Coovadia Combined School.

“Netball is a sport where you have to work as a team to win,” she said.

In 2013 she played in the GU/13 team that won the league.

“If one teammate has a bad day, it affects us all, so it is important that we motivate one another.”

Nine netball players from the school participated in the second Mpumalanga trials in Secunda.

Only Nondumiso was elected for the third round of the trials in eMalahleni (Witbank), playing in the Black team.

Unfortunately she dropped out.

“Even though I did not make it, I will not stop playing netball, in fact I will keep on trying and giving it my all.”

She also said that netball is her life and that it is her way of escaping from the world.

She is a goal keeper.

According to her she wants to play centre one day because she loves running and being everywhere on the court.

She also said that a netball player should practice a lot and be able to take chances.

“Work hard for what you want,” is her life motto.

Nondumiso said the U/15 team would be nothing without their coach, Ms Evelina Vilakzi.

“She motivates us and is always there to help us to improve our skills,” she said.

In her spare time, she reads and plays netball with her friends.

She said with a smile that her mother, Ms Zodwa Vilakazi, is her inspiration.

“She helps me with everything, she is caring and loving and she knows what is right for me.”

According to her, her mother taught her to be strong.

Nondumiso mentioned that her best friend and teammate, Nobuhle Thono, calms her nerves before a match.

“My goals as a netball player are to achieve many wins and to play in the South African team.”

She wants to become an optometrist one day, because she loves to work with people.

“I am a girl that wants to make a difference in other people’s lives.”
