Secunda Rally sees local teams doing well
Coen van Zyl and Kosie van der Merwe not only won first place in the open class, but ended fourth overall in their Subaru Impreza.
Motorsport enthusiasts from all over came together to watch the Secunda Rally that took place in and around town from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening.
The rally was once again a major success and the local drivers did well, keeping the town’s name high.
Coen van Zyl and Kosie van der Merwe not only won first place in the open class, but ended fourth overall in their Subaru Impreza.
The overall winners were Lee Rose and Elvene Coetzee in their Ford Escort.
This car was the envy of many of the other drivers and spectators, as it had recently been overhauled and had a much coveted BDA engine.
Chris Coertse and Greg Godrich in their Mazda 2 came second overall and first in the R2 class.
Richard Leeke (Jr) and Henry Khone were third overall and second in the R2 class.
Another local team, the father and daughter team of Lune Snyman and Edward Strydom, also known as Team Lunetic from Bethal, came in ninth place overall and finished second in the open class.
Of the 20 teams that participated, only 10 teams were able to complete all 13 stages of this notoriously gruelling rally.
The Secunda Regional Rally was also held over the weekend, encompassing the final stages of the Secunda Rally.
The regional rally was won by Jono van Wyk and Scott Howden in their Ford Fiesta.
