Marathon club runs for a good cause

Bags and tins of food were handed over to Ms Yvette Bodington and Dr Darko Zupanc of Syrmiavet Veterinary Hospital.

The Secunda Marathon Club hosted a charity run to collect dog and cat food for Mission Pawsible.

Mission Pawsible is an NPO animal welfare organisation that takes care of strays and injured animals and also finds family-friendly homes for the animals that are up for adoption.

Bags and tins of food were handed over to Ms Yvette Bodington and Dr Darko Zupanc of Syrmiavet Veterinary Hospital.

After handing over the pet food, the marathon club proceeded with their social 10km charity run.

The marathon club has also sent out an important notice to the community and surrounding towns about road running safety.

“We know that our community in the Teks area has adopted a running culture.

“It has been like this for the past 40 years since the marathon club was established in Secunda. As a town, we have developed and now we have significantly more traffic movement than before,” said Michal Müller.

“We have three local marathon clubs namely the Secunda Marathon Club, Sasol Marathon Club and the Evander Athletics Club.”

Club members are to follow the rules set out by Athletics South Africa (ASA) and also Athletics Mpumalanga (AMPU) and are held accountable by it.

Motorists are held accountable by the Road Traffic Act.

“As runners we always try to be visible to motorists and other road users. Our attire, bright clothing and reflective gear (optional) makes us visible. We also run on the road, facing oncoming traffic to further ensure we are visible to motorists.

“We urge motorists to please give runners enough space on the shoulder of the road. We make a plea to our community, especially the motorists, to please be vigilant and be aware of runners on the road,” said Michal Müller.

Regrettably, there has been a number of fatalities in recent years which could have been avoided.

“We as runners have a passion for our sport and want to practice, for as long as our health allows it. Running is a way of life for us. Our livelihood. Please don’t take it away from us,” concluded

Michal Müller.
