Local musician reaches for the stars

Local musician determined to be a professional musician.

Upcoming hip-hop artist Sibusiso Hlatshwayo, also known as “Chillas”, is reaching for the stars with his music.

He is one of four children raised by a single parent, who worked as a domestic worker in Benoni.

“My older sisters took care of us, while my mother was working to put food on the table,” he said.

From humble beginnings he is determined to succeed in everything he does in life.

He attended Igugulabasha Primary School and Thandeka Primary School and proceeded to Thobelani Secondary School.

“I joined the choir at the age of 10 at Thandeka Primary School and began writing my own songs at the age of 12.”

He has been singing from then and performing whenever he was given a chance. He has entered numerous singing competitions, in pursuit of his dream of becoming a professional musician.

He also did a three year electrical engineering N4 course at Gert Sibande College and is a member of an Afro pop group called Iculo.

“I am a versatile musician, I can sing gospel, afro pop, kwaito etc., but I mostly do hip-hop and house music,” he said.

Sibusiso performs at most local events and will be performing at the Standerton Music Festival and Expo in September.

This 26-year-old is looking for a recording deal with a major recording label.

“I want to grow musically and become one of the best musicians in South Africa.”

He is also a member of the Lekwa Arts and Culture forum, responsible for organising events.

One of his dreams is to have his own recording label and groom local talent.
