Officers remove expired food from six shops in Evander
“We told the shop keepers that expired food must be removed immediately, because it does not comply with health and safety standards as required by law.”
EVANDER – Expired food was found on the shelves of six shops belonging to foreign nationals in Evander on Thursday, June 24.
The Police, Govan Mbeki Municipality’s law enforcement team and health officials from Gert Sibande District held a compliance operation that day.
Other shops were found not complying with Covid-19 regulations, as they allowed access to customers without masks.
“When found not adhering to Covid-19 regulations, we first give the shop owner a warning and compel him or her to comply immediately, and if not, we are forced to enforce the law by arresting them,” said Ms Zama Mathonsi, environmental health practitioner at Gert Sibande District Municipality.
“We told the shop keepers that expired food must be removed immediately because it does not comply with health and safety standards as required by law,” she said.
