Hundreds tackle hills and cold at GSDM 3-in-1 Marathon

Runners from across the region tested their endurance and determination during the Gert Sibande District Municipality 3-in-1 Marathon held in Ermelo on May 16.

Hundreds of athletes and social runners gathered in Ermelo on May 16 for the ninth Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) 3-in-1 Marathon, tackling challenging routes in icy early-morning conditions.

Participants competed in the 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half-marathon, 10km race, and 4.9km fun run, demonstrating determination and endurance as they conquered the event’s demanding opening hill.

Whether chasing podium finishes, personal bests, or simply enjoying the experience, athletes created an energetic atmosphere throughout the day as supporters lined the routes.

The men’s 42.2km marathon title went to Simon Sibeko from Northwest, who crossed the finish line in an impressive 2:26:13.

Ziphindile Dlamini from Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality claimed the women’s title in 3:24:13.
In the 21.1km race, Samkelo Ngobese from Mbombela won the men’s category in 1:09:33, while Salome Cooper secured victory in the women’s division with a time of 1:30:42.

The men’s 10km race was won by Sibongiseni Maseko from Mbombela in 32:23, while Reitumetse Likosane took the women’s honours in 43:57.

Junior athletes and various age-group runners were also recognised for standout performances, with a total of R88 500 in prize money awarded across categories.

GSDM councillor Walter Mngomezulu officially launched the marathon and participated in the fun run, promoting healthy living and active lifestyles.

Every athlete who completed their race received a medal.

The marathon attracted runners from across South Africa, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo, Northwest and Mpumalanga, as well as athletes from Kenya and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Organisers thanked sponsors, volunteers, emergency services, law enforcement and support teams for helping ensure a safe and successful event.
