Five arrested after police pursuit ends in crash near Delmas

The Delmas and Eloff communities were asked on social media to pray for the injured officers.

A police chase ended in a serious head-on collision on the R555 route heading towards Eloff, near Delmas yesterday (May 27).

According to authorities, officers responded to a tip-off about suspects unloading stolen groceries from a truck in Sundra. The incident is believed to be linked to an organised grocery theft operation. Police acted quickly, arresting one suspect at the scene while four others escaped in a white VW Polo.

The suspects fled in the direction of Delmas, prompting a pursuit. Members of Delmas SAPS joined the operation, but during the chase the fleeing vehicle collided head-on with an approaching police van.

Two of the suspects sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment, while the remaining two were taken into police custody.

Two of the four police officers involved in the crash, Captain Carla Hartley and Lieutenant Colonel Salomé van der Westhuizen suffered several broken bones. They were transported to parklands Hospital.

The Delmas and Eloff communities were asked on social media to pray for the injured officers.
