A man, 35, is in critical condition after a transformer exploded in Weltevreden Park on Monday night.
The transformer exploded after having caught alight. ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring says in a press statement that paramedics arrived on scene to find the man lying in a veld near the smouldering transformer.
“A number of people had stopped to offer assistance,” says Meiring and adds that witnesses on scene had told paramedics that they saw the man pulling some clothes from the transformer box before it caught fire.
“The man was assessed and paramedics discovered he had sustained severe burns over most of his body.”
Meiring says paramedics had to administer advanced life support to stabilise his vital signs. Once stable he was transported to Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg for further medical attention.
