Dealing with death
‘We at AED Attorneys are a family who have compassion for our clients and our dedicated team offers guidance and assistance to you and your family during the difficult time of losing a loved one.’
They understand that dealing with your loved one’s affairs may be a complicated and confusing process. For this reason they render estate administration services to any person who has nominated them as executors in their Last Will and Testament. The same applies if the deceased did not leave a valid will (died intestate). They further act as agents in the case of a non-professional executor having been appointed.
Here they offer some guidance to the process that needs to be followed when a person passes away and the services they provide: Reporting the estate to the Master of the High Court, who appoints a representative to deal with the deceased’s affairs – an executor; communicating with all debtors and creditors; taking control, protecting and transferring of all assets (house, car, bank accounts); dealing with SARS; paying all debts and administration expenses, as well as drafting and submitting the Liquidation and Distribution Account.
At AED Attorneys they will ensure that your hard-earned legacy will be well taken care of. With trust and respect, AED Attorneys will stand by you and your family throughout your time of need, creating a valued partnership for life. Contact 011 033 8701 or visit www.aedattorneys.co.za.
Make the most of your garden
Flowers, Seeds and Busy Bee’s opened at the end of October 2017 in the centre of Florida’s business district. They are a nursery stocking a wide variety of plants, pots, seeds, fertilisers, compost and potting soil. Their prices are competitive and we offer personalised, friendly service. They like to offer advice on getting the most out of your plants and garden!
The nursery is a beautiful space in the middle of the mayhem a busy town like Florida has, and people often pop in to unwind. The rooster that crows all day adds to the feel of being on an urban farm. Every first Saturday of the month, we have refreshments and sweet and savoury treats available to purchase. Andrea and Grant make the best milk tart, chocolate brownies and vetkoek and mince that you’ve ever tasted, and everyone who has tasted their food has been back for more!
While the kids are playing in the playground or visiting the little animal petting zoo area, the adults can stroll around the nursery or relax with a cup of coffee and something to eat.
Every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm is Senior Citizen Appreciation Day. They have complimentary tea, coffee and scones as well as 10 per cent Senior citizen discount on all stock. Come visit their little garden nursery, you’ll love the beautiful environment they have created!
6 Tips for taking care of your eyes
1. Eat well
Good eye health starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts. To get them, fill your plate with green leafy veggies, salmon, tuna, and other oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources, oranges and other citrus fruits or juices as well as oysters and pork.
2. Quit smoking
It makes you more likely to develop cataracts, damage your optic nerve, and macular degeneration, among many other medical problems.
If you’ve tried to kick the habit before only to start again, keep at it. The more times you try to quit, the more likely you are to succeed. Ask your doctor for help.
3. Wear sunglasses
The right pair of shades will help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose a pair that blocks 99 per cent to 100 per cent of UVA and UVB rays.
Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare while you drive.
4. Use safety eyewear
If you use hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles. Sports like ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury. Wear eye protection. Helmets with protective face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses will shield your eyes.
5. Look away from the computer screen
Staring at a computer or phone screen for too long can cause eyestrain, blurry vision, trouble focusing at a distance, dry eyes, headaches as well as neck, back, and shoulder pain
To protect your eyes make sure your glasses or contacts prescription is up to date and good for looking at a computer screen. If your eye strain won’t go away, talk to your doctor about computer glasses. Move the screen so your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. That lets you look slightly down at the screen. Try to avoid glare from windows and lights. Use an anti-glare screen if needed.
6. Visit your eye doctor regularly
Everyone needs a regular eye exam, even young children. It helps protect your sight and lets you see your best. Eye exams can also find diseases, like glaucoma, that have no symptoms. It’s important to spot them early on, when they’re easier to treat. Depending on your eye health needs, you can see one of two types of doctors.

Florida – back in the day …
The area which is referred to as Florida was originally established as the farm Vogelstruisfontein. Vogelstruisfontein and the farms Roodepoort and Paardekraal were established as mining camps after the discovery of gold in 1881. The suburb was laid out in 1889 and then proclaimed the following year on 14 April 1890 and by 1904 became a suburb of Roodepoort. It was either named after Florida, USA or the suburb’s originator Hendrik van Hoven whose late niece was called Florrie. Florida Lake is a large area of water south of the railway line.
It is flanked by residential properties to the north, and parklands to the east and west. The main road through Florida, Goldman Street, forms the spine for local business activity and civic services.
The local library is one of the best facilities of its kind in Johannesburg. The western end of Goldman Street is home to a number of antique dealers specialising in Africana furniture.Flora Centre is located in Florida Hills and is Florida’s largest and most popular shopping centre. The local sports field at Trezona Park is home to Florida Albion Football Club. There are also facilities for hockey, cricket, tennis and squash.

The importance of eye testing
At 32 per cent, visual impairment is the highest of all disabilities in South Africa; even higher than physical disability. Women make up 57 per cent of the total number of blind or partially sighted people, while 23 per cent of visually impaired people are between the ages of 15 and 36 years. The top-three causes of blindness are cataract, uncorrected refractive errors and glaucoma – this is according to the South African National Council for the Blind.
