Annual Boerewors competition smoking hot
Florida hosts regional leg of famous competition.
This year 1 000 boerewors experts will battle it out, boasting more than 1 150 unique boerewors recipes in the regional rounds of one of South Africa’s fiercest culinary battles – the 2013 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition.
Two nerve-racking regional clashes already took place on Saturday 10 and 17 August at selected venues countrywide, and and the last will be on 24 August . Regional round participants need to go all out to impress the judges with their skills in making and cooking boerewors, as only the first-place winners of each of the 88 regional rounds will go on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in ten provincial rounds that will take place on Saturday 14 September.
On 17 August local members of the public and media had the opportunity to watch as the boerewors fundis battled it out in the regionals at Shoprite Florida, Florida Square
Amidst the sizzling fires and the inviting aromas from the boerewors on the braais, the 15 contestants gave it their all. Visitors were entertained by well-known DJ Alfie who was also the MC for the day. Members of the public took part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, whilst jumping castles and games kept the little ones entertained. Coca-Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, offered promotional activities and sampling of their products.
An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (Saca) judged the regional round where prospective Boerewors Champions had to braai one kilogram of their own-recipe boerewors, which was judged both uncooked and cooked.
The three contestants who came out on top were in first place Christina Coetzee followed by Erwin Bosman and Natasha van der Merwe.
Unfortunately only Coetzee will go through to the divisional round, hoping to become the Boerewors Champion who will earn the sought-after 2013 Boerewors Crown and also drive away in a brand-new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.
