Warning to cyclists and runners

Fitness enthusiasts are to avoid dangerous shortcut.

Cyclist Mark May wishes to warn residents that a spot that is popular with especially runners and cyclists has become a crime hot spot.

In the past week both May and a fellow cyclist were attacked next to the bridge across Corlett Avenue adjacent to TJ Pallets and President Road.

May was assaulted badly with a brick and says he had to fight off his attackers while fearing for his life. There was a similar attack a few days before May was assaulted, also on a cyclist.

According to May mountain bikers and runners see this piece of veld as a convenient shortcut between President Road and Corlett Avenue without realising that many a runner and cyclist were attacked there in the past. In 2013 a boy and his father were attacked by a knife-wielding suspect.

Residents are advised to avoid this area, especially at dawn and dusk.
