Long grass gets a groom

RADIOKOP – Resident's Association fear the safety of residents as long grass along main road is a perfect hideaway for criminals.

The Radiokop Resident’s Association fired up their weed eaters and grass cutters on 2 April to take care of the long grass along Christiaan de Wet Road in Radiokop.

About 15 people showed up to cut the very long grass along the road. Ingrid Dinsmore, the vice chairperson of the resident’s association said that they have had situations where burglars hid in the grass. “A few weeks ago there was an attempted break-in, in one of the homes in Radiokop. They jumped over the wall and hid in the grass,” explained Dinsmore.

Secretary of the association, Peter Dinsmore added that by the time the security company comes, the burglar has disappeared into the long grass. “We decided to cut the grass for security reasons,” said Peter. Ingrid added that the RRA aims to keep their area clean and tidy. “Two gardening services came out to support us.” said Ingrid.

Vaughan Weedon from Weedon’s Weed Wackers, is a garden service responsible for a complex in Radiokop. “I received a phone call two weeks ago about the grass-cutting initiative. It is good for a company to give back to the community as they give back to me as a business,” said Weedon. Yvonne Holdsworth from Lwethu gardening service in Weltevreden Park said that she saw that they will be cutting the grass and decided to come out and help.

The hard work of committed residents in the hot sun paid off as a large part of the grass on the sidewalks alongside Christiaan de Wet was a lot shorter by the end of the day.
