Roodepoort Police Station claims top honours at Johannesburg District Excellence Awards
Police officers in Roodepoort are celebrating after securing Station of the Year honours alongside individual accolades at a district awards ceremony.
Roodepoort Police Station has been named Station of the Year at the Johannesburg District Excellence Awards held on October 9, recognising efforts to combat crime and improve overall performance during the 2025/ 26 financial year.
According to Vispol commander Colonel Sonja Engelbrecht, the awards were based on several factors, including arrests made, crime reduction through police action and the station’s overall performance.
“This year, we’ve managed to reduce 17 community-related crimes and have successfully addressed the generators of crime,” she said.
Roodepoort station commander Brigadier Irene Sekwakwa also received recognition, finishing as runner-up in the Senior Operational Commander Award category.
Engelbrecht expressed gratitude to the various role players and stakeholders whose contributions helped the station achieve this milestone.
“We are grateful to our role players and stakeholders who have made this a success, including Crime Intelligence, JMPD, community police forums, local security firms, neighbourhood watches and pastors who have provided divine intervention,” she added.
District awards recognise local police excellence
The station also celebrated the achievement of Constable Adam Mkasi, now promoted to sergeant, who received the Best Detective award for the district.
With 11 years of experience, Mkasi said the recognition was particularly meaningful, reflecting his investigative work and the convictions secured during the past financial year.
He specialises in investigating crimes involving tampering with essential infrastructure.
“I feel honoured to be recognised for the work that I’m doing. It’s motivating for the entire community of Roodepoort and me,” he said.
