56-year-old woman arrested for possession of illegal firearm

Suspect detained at Roodepoort Police Station.

In an interesting turn of events, a house robbery in Witpoortjie has led to the arrest of the home-owner, who was the complainant.

On 31 August at about 11am, police officers were performing their duties when they received a complaint of a house robbery in Van Alkmaar Street in Witpoortjie.

They responded and while investigating the crime scene, came across a firearm in one of the bedrooms. They enquired as to who owned the firearm. The home-owner, a 56-year-old woman, told them that it belonged to her. She said it was for self-defence purposes, but that it was not licensed.

She was promptly arrested and detained at the Roodepoort Police Station.
