Watch: Video of attempted car theft in broad light

He casually approached the vehicle, paused for a moment to take something out of his pants pocket and stopped at the passenger side.

An employee at the Caxton Joburg West office almost became part of South Africa’s crime statistics early on the morning of 7 October.

At approximately 7.50 am, a man approached the employee’s vehicle, which was parked in front of the Witpoortjie Spar. He casually approached the vehicle, paused for a moment to take something out of his pants pocket and stopped at the passenger side. It took him about two seconds to open the locked car door and climb into the vehicle.

On the Closed Circuit Television Video (CCTV) footage it can be seen how he tries to start the car but does not succeed. He then gets out of the vehicle and casually strolls away.

According to an eyewitness, the man then walked towards the nearby Total petrol station and motioned for someone to come and assist him. However, when they saw everyone arriving for work, they decided to abandon their mission and left.
