Weather update: Flooding reported in parts of Gauteng as heavy rains continue
Residents are urged to remain vigilant as widespread showers will continue in most parts of Gauteng throughout the week
The South African Weather Service warns of localised and flash flooding in several parts of Gauteng as wet weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the week.
It is reported that areas such as Sandton, Johannesburg Central and the M1 highway have already been affected.
Predictions are that other parts of the province may also be affected as widespread showers continue until Sunday.
The Weather Service’s Wayne Venter has urged residents to remain vigilant and to keep away from areas where more than 65cm of water has accumulated. Venter said the heavy rains may subside on Wednesday but will resume on Thursday. “We’ve issued a warning of possible flooding over most areas in Gauteng, especially low-lying areas of the province. Gauteng residents must be careful as these can be dangerous,” he said.
Venter said the Weather Service has issued safety tips and will continue to keep the public informed about persisting weather conditions.
Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances, while residents are also urged to keep their pets sheltered.
