Cub scouts committed to social development
Cubs nationwide completed eight tasks with four themes
Social and community development is a vital cog in the nation-building machine. Making it their mission to combat social issues is the 1st Eagle Cub Pack, which recently completed their National Cub Challenge 2019.
Setting themselves four social development goals with the intention of completing two tasks per goal, the Witpoortjie-based cub pack created eight projects to tackle common social problems. Poverty, hunger, health and education were the themes of the four goals, with the respective projects wanting to make a tangible difference to those affected.
Among the standout projects were the assembly of activity bags for a local early childhood development centre to promote quality education, and they made several posters that went up in the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden promoting ethical enjoyment of the park. The cubs also developed flower and food gardens, and donated soup packets in order to tackle hunger.
The National Cub Challenge is a nationwide Scouts South Africa initiative that hopes to get young people actively involved in social development. Completing the challenge coincided with an awards ceremony to recognise their outstanding members. Michelle van Wyk was awarded the BP Spirit Award, Aiden Kilian was Runner-Up Cub of the Year, and Bevan Leal won Cub of the Year as well as Most Interest Badges 2019.
