The Florida Hiking and Adventure Club (FHAC) extended a helping hand to the elderly in need, by hosting a Christmas in July initiative to collect non-perishable foods for the old age homes.

The FHAC asked their members to help collect food every month until the end of November. On 16 December 2019, Bill Brough, chairperson of the FHAC, together with committee members Mark and Colleen van der Merwe, handed over the items to Fatima Solomon, secretary of Outreach for the Aged.

This non-profit company is committed primarily to creating a safe, secure, healthy, cared for and hunger-free environment for elderly people. In 2019 the organisation officially launched their three programmes – meals for the aged, healthy Gogo and Nkunu and the Holiday buddies.

“The organisation is in the process of establishing itself and is aspiring to extend its outreach to the rest of Gauteng and nationally. Since the inception of the programme, the organisation has managed to feed Donovan McDonald Old Age Home residents more than 200 times. The feeding programme provides a meal to 130 elderly people once a week. We need to raise money for the organisation to be able to continue this programme and add some more. We want to increase the number of days we are feeding,” said Fatima.

They are hosting their very first fundraiser to help their programmes and the elderly.

“A Dinner Dance will be held on 6 March. The tickets can be bought from us at R200 per ticket. We will also appreciate sponsorships for the event,” she stated.
