Two suspects arrested after robbery in Florida

The suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were arrested and appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court

Two suspects were arrested after an attempted robbery at the Shoprite centre on Goldman Street on Friday, 29 May.

According to a Facebook post from Apcan Security, members from the Florida Community Policing Forum (CPF) were in pursuit of the two suspects who had fled the scene on foot.

One of them jumped into the passenger side of a bakkie in an attempt to get away.

The owner of the bakkie managed to get out of the vehicle and a shootout ensued, resulting in the suspect getting out of the bakkie and running for safety.

An unlicensed firearm used in the attempted robbery was also confiscated.

Apcan Security was alerted by a panic signal, and upon arrival, the Apcan officer saw the second suspect and gave chase. Through a joint effort by the CPF and Apcan members, the suspect who had hijacked the vehicle, as well as the second suspect, was apprehended.

Sergeant Mpho More, the Florida Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said, “On 29 May at about 11am two unknown men entered a clothing shop at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Goldman Street, Florida and tried to rob them with a firearm. The shop assistant screamed and both suspects ran away. They were cornered by the community, and the one with the firearm was cornered by the security officers, resulting in a shoot-out.”

One of the suspects who was wounded in a shoot-out is being treated by paramedics.

She added that the suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were arrested and appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 June.
