Honeydew police sergeant remains in custody over alleged sexual abuse

The officer is accused of assaulting and sexually grooming a female relative who was 14 when the alleged abuse began.

A 49-year-old police sergeant stationed at Honeydew Police Station remains in custody following his first appearance in Protea Magistrate’s Court on October 26, in connection with the alleged rape and sexual grooming of a female relative who was under his care.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the officer on October 23. He faces charges of rape and sexual grooming relating to alleged incidents that occurred between 2022 and October 2024.

According to IPID, the complainant, now 20, was 14 when the alleged abuse began. She had been placed under the care of her aunt, who was married to the suspect, after losing both her parents.

The alleged incidents reportedly began while the complainant’s aunt was hospitalised. During this period, the suspect allegedly forced himself on the teenager in her bedroom.

IPID further alleges that the suspect intimidated and threatened the complainant to prevent her from reporting the abuse. He is also accused of giving her money to secure her silence.

The sergeant was detained at the Moroka holding cells following his arrest. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on October 29 for a bail application.
